Jared Landsman, a junior in Civil Engineering, has not only completed a Skanska Construction internship and co-op with Simpson Gumpertz & Heger, but also serves as project
director for Cornell Unversity Sustainable Design. "CUSD empowers students to make an impact now by providing engaged learning opportunities to conduct proactive research and innovative design," said Landsman. After transforming from a Solar Decathlon team, CUSD has currently taken on several projects including: Schoolhouse South Africa (SSA), Sustainable Neighborhoods Nicaragua (SNN), and Sustainability Research Facility (SRF). As director for CUSD, Jared hopes for the program to achieve an "ecologically, socially, and economically sustainable symbiosis between humans and their environments."
In addition to his duties as director of CUSD, Jared is co-leading a brand new project to aid in the design of a new facility for Cornell Outdoor Education. He also worked with the Harvard Graduate School of Design in putting together the second annual Interdisciplinary Student Sustainability Summit, which took place on March 2nd, 2013.
Aside from Jared's participation in CUSD, his co-op with Simpson Gumpertz & Heger was what made his Civil Engineering major really come to life. Based in Waltham, MA, the structural engineering firm "designs, investigates, and rehabilitates structures and building enclosures." During his time with the firm, Jared's day to day tasks included: drafting (using CAD and Revit), estimating construction costs, performing water testing, developing design criteria from building code, and doing structural analysis (using RAM). "It was really exciting being able to see the different aspects of the building industry, first from a construction perspective and then a design/consulting perspective," said Landsman of his experience.
